Brief About Sushil Ansal

Talking to Sushil Ansal and Pranav separately, Sushil Ansal and Pranav meet only fleetingly but are available to each other when necessary. The father is the boss and has the right to exercise the veto but would clearly rather not. They are together at breakfast and dinner, if individual schedules permit, and try and meet at the office at some point between 12.30 and 2 p.m. “We go for meetings separately,” says Pranav, “never together. It’s a waste of resources. If one of us takes a call, the other will stand by it.”

To Pranav, Sushil Ansal’s reservoir of experience and insider knowledge of the real estate industry is an asset that needs to be tapped judiciously. “He keeps talking of retiring in five years,” says the son of his father, “but to be honest it will be a gradual retirement. I want him to take it easy, though he will still spend six-seven hours looking at work-related matters. We are increasingly delegating decision-making to professionals. They will run the company, so that the promoters can do the strategic thinking. This is what will keep him busy.” it is interesting how alike they sound, almost completing each other’s sentences. In a sense, this is suggestive of a shared temperament. Sheetal noticed this when she married into the Ansal family in 1993. “Both my father-in-law and my husband were never harrowed and hassled. The men in this family are like still waters. It’s a gene passed on from father to son to, now, grandson.”

A Bombay girl who by her own admission had lived a sheltered life and was a quiet student at Sydenham College, Sheetal found Delhi a dramatic change. To a large degree, her fears and anxieties were put at rest by the loving welcome she got from Pranav’s family. Far from stuffy and stilted, the atmosphere in the busy household she was married into was “fairly informal and easygoing.” She is a favorite with her in-laws. Sushil Ansal says, “She has fine qualities of head and heart and is a pillar of the family, having strengthened bonds in tough times.” For Kusum, Sheetal is not her daughter-in-law, but simply “my third daughter.” Sushil Ansal went out of his way to get to know Sheetal, a trait that is almost his trademark. “He is such a people person,” says Sheetal, “and so very good at judging people. In a crowded room, he can strike up a conversation with a stranger, pick the best in him and make him feel special. It’s a gift.”
